2009 Q-Fest

Posted on November 3, 2009

The Qross Qultural Queer Film Festival is this week, as is the 2009 Campus Dialogue on Race. Both events are designed to promote tolerance and create a safe for students and faculty to discuss their differences with respect and yada yada yada. Then this guy showed up.

He was standing on his soap box (no literally, he had a box of some kind and was standing on it), and was reading the various passages from the Bible that condemn homosexuality. The mob you see crowding around him (I don’t know his name, so let’s call him Dick, as he is so reminiscent of our dear friend Mr. Otterstad. Just when I was getting homesick, a little piece of home shows up here.) was shouting various insults, and trying to get his sign away from him. If the armed police weren’t there, I may have been concerned for this man’s safety (maybe, I found it difficult to not wish this man torn apart by furious butch lesbians, but that’s neither here nor there). There was one student in particular, and she was standing right next to Dick, shouting in an increasing volume “YOU ARE NOT GOD! YOU ARE NOT GOD! YOU ARE NOT GOD!” In response, Dick read his Bible louder and louder in an attempt to drown her out.

To sum up, both sides treated each other with mutual dignity and respect, and after a civilized discussion on the issue during which both sides kept an open mind, everyone walked away with a deeper understanding of everyone else’s viewpoint.

Take notice people, this is definitely the way to get these issues resolved.
